Mori Tower

Postby MaggieMontgomery on Sun Jul 27, 2008 3:21 pm

Anyone ever been to Mori Tower in Roppongi? Hubs and I went last night. There is an observation deck on the 52d floor called "Tokyo City View", an art museum on the 53d and on the top is the open air "Sky Deck". Absouletly stunning! Admission to all 3 levels is only 1500Y per adult. It was spectacular! The views were breathtaking, beautiful, close-up view of Tokyo Tower all lit up. Also in the building are loads of shops and restaurants. We went down the street for dinner at Tony Roma's. I know, I know, all the way to Roppongi for American food? But their Bluecheese burger is so good! And the hot fudge brownie sundae is to die for!! We stopped at Almond for some yummy pastries to bring home.

And if you haven't checked it out yet, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government buildings in Shinjuku have free observation decks on the 45th floor, super cool! And you can head to Shakey's for a pizza buffet, the same one I ate at 30 years ago as a little girl!! Oishiiii!

Next on your list should be the Hyatt. We are saving up the thousands of dollars it will take to buy a small side dish for two at their restaurant!

I've been up in there, but I thought it was only called "Roppongi Hills". When I researched just now on the web, apparently it's called "Roppongi Hills Mori Tower" -- You're right though, it's an awesome visit. An absolutely breathtaking view of Tokyo in a 360 degree range. The night view is truly stunning...

There is also the DoCoMo building in Tokyo that has an observation deck. If you don't know which one I'm talking about it's the replica of the Empire State Building that you see when you drive to the New Sanno. I would love to see what it looks like from there! Thanks for the info though I definitely want to get pics from there now!

Thanks for the info GG! I put it on my list! I don't think I'll ever get tired of that view and I love seeing in from so many different vantage points! I haven't made it up anywhere for a sunset yet, can't ever seem to time it right, so that's my next goal!

Made it to Tokyo City View for a sunset a few weeks ago, magnificent! And Roppongi Hills was beautiful w/ all the Xmas lights. I went by myself so I was able to stay as long as I wanted, 2.5hrs, 89 pictures! LOL. You'd think there'd be a limit on how many pictures one person can take of Tokyo Tower, how many do you really need? But I just couldn't help myself!

I'll hop the necromancing bandwagon and bring this one back, too.

We have a friend visiting and, of course, are doing a crapload of sightseeing. I'm so glad I did my homework online, reading not only websites for each attraction but also plenty, PLENTY of tourist reviews. I hadn't even thought to come here and search it up, but I did immediately after we got back yesterday to see if anybody pointed out what we had figured out ourselves.

Tokyo Tower is a wonderful place to go to. I thoroughly enjoyed the wax museum and rock shop near the end, and I would have loved to go to the Guinness museum and aquarium...but the observatories seem like HUGE tourist traps. Why pay ¥2100 per person to get a semi-quality view? Seeing it from "the other side", after a revelation of sorts, it seems like many tourists only go because they feel obligated to see something that they "should" see.

However, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building that Maggie has mentioned is UNBELIEVABLE. Not only does it offer a HIGHER view than Tokyo Tower, it is 100% free! There are two towers, the North tower and the South tower, and the South tower is considered to have a "slightly more interesting" view than the North, but the North is still breathtaking...not to mention, the South tower closes early at 5pm, and we were at the North in the vicinity of about 7:30pm. They have express elevators specially designed to take tourists straight to the 45th floor, complete with uniformed escorts. Be warned that any bags you carry are subject to inspection, but the escorts are gloved, they are NOT intrusive (they asked me to unzip my purse and glanced inside, did not poke around at all, then bowed very gratefully for the cooperation) and they are very polite. Also on the 45th floor are plenty of souvenir kiosks and a very cute but very small and private Italian restaurant.

To get to this building, simply hop the train to Shinjuku station but DO NOT LEAVE the station. Winding tunnels they may be (and the walk feels worse than Narita!), but if you follow the signs underground, it will take you RIGHT inside the lobby of the TMGO.

Considering we went not only to Tokyo Tower but were heading to Hard Rock Cafe regardless, Shinjuku was on the way home anyways and it was so worth it. So in my opinion, when it comes to observatories, TMGO > Tokyo Tower BY FAR.

(Please excuse the amateur photography...)
