New, and Yokota just may be next for us

Postby sexymophandlemama on Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:15 am

Hello everyone I just signed up. I found this site through another support site.
So I made my user ID after a Pearl Jam song (well sort of, I used sexy not foxy). I can never think of good user IDs.

So my husband is Active Duty, and wants to stay overseas. We are currently in Europe. I love overseas too, and told myself well as long as we don't get Yokota, cause I hear you shouldn't take dogs and you can't really get housing for dogs there. Well lo and behold, guess what his ONLY overseas option is? That's right, Yokota. And I can't talk him out of it.

There is another choice but he won't put in for it. So I've decided that I can look at some information at Yokota and prepare myself as best as I can. I figure there's a chance he won't get it, but there's a huge chance we will.

So living in Japan, IMO, would be awesome. I have no problem with other cultures, language barriers, foods, and giving up that stuff in the US everyone can't seem to live without. But I CAN'T bear to give up my dogs.

From what I've read here, you need to budget extra money to pay out of pocket while waiting for a house, and pray you get one that will allow your dogs. I'm not worried about getting them there; just getting a house. I figured if we went to Kadena, maybe they'd lift the housing regs and let us live off base and I've talked to a few people who got off-base housing that allowed dogs. But noo we had to get Yokota where it looks like off-base living wouldn't even be an option even if you were allowed. Anyway, we have no kids so most likely would get offered towers first.

But Tokyo looks like a fun place to go to. Once I get past the dog issue I think I could be quite happy there. If anyone has any advice for me let me know. We'd be there NLT Sept. 30th, probably arrive early Sept if we were allowed.

Welcome to YokotaTalk! So, which site led you here? Just curious.

Oh, and by the way, LOTS of folks bring their dogs. From what I understand here, it's not really a problem. There's plenty of members on this board who can help you out there. Housing shouldn't be an issue. Off base is an option, but you should ask housing some questions about out-of-pocket expenses and reimbursement.

Tokyo can be challenging, but IMHO, that's part of the fun. Like anywhere, it's what you make of it. There's lots to do any time of year.

Good luck!

There is plenty of garden units available so that does not seem to be a problem. You do need to go through some very specific hoops with the dogs paperwork though. Be sure that you do not rely on the Vet where you are now to do it all correctly. There are time limits of when the medical report can be dated etc. You just have to really read the info, believe the information and then follow the steps.

It was a huge hassle for us but we did it. Then when we got to Japan, they barely blinked an eye and our dog was in his new country. Also, since you have dog you will want to have a van pick you up at the airport. You can not take your dog out of the kennel in the airport. We put the dog and kennel in the van, drove just a bit to get bottled water etc and let the dog pee for what seemed like a full hour!

You have a great sense of spirt so it will be fun here. Nice base, nice people living here. Plus you can bow at other drivers that give you the right of way.

Where are you coming from?

I'm coming from England and plan to use my pet shipper that I used to bring my dogs from the US to England. So they can do all the work and arrangements for me for a fat amount of cash, but I saved for it so I might be alright.

Also coming for the UK, it's a rabies-free and I shouldn't have to do much with quarantine at least.

Thanks for your input Libby I'm glad to know there are units there... we would be coming after the big PCS rush in July and August, I don't know if that's a good thing - I know it's harder during those rushes but if people aren't leaving there may not be a lot emptying out either. Guess we'll see!

I love the idea of foreign countries. If we move there I would love to get out and do stuff off base as much as possible. Here in England it's easy because of the language, but you wouldn't believe how many Americans won't leave base and are afraid. I go off all the time all over the place. I think living overseas is so much fun and it's so exciting.

So, what is the name of the pet shipper? I am headed to Yokota in July and we are leaving the dog at my parent's house until we get set up. It would be nice to have someone that can take care of all the arrangements for us so I don't have to burden my parent's too much.

Pet Relocation is one, they are very expensive be warned. If you do a google for pet shipper or pet mover you can get other options.

I looked into using a pet shipper when we were moving here and most of them will help you with the paperwork, but that's it. They won't ship your pet to Japan. You might have more luck, but I couldn't find one. Kids or not, they offer the first unit available that meets your bedroom needs. Check the CE Housing fact sheet to figure out what you're authorized. For info traveling from a non-rabies country to japan, check the US Army's veterinary district of japan's website for the regs. Don't use the Japanese goverents rules. As a SOFA member, the rules are different. All the info is out there, so good luck and keep up that great attitude :)

My pet shipper will ship them to Japan :D
We are traveling from a non-rabies country.
I am aware that they offer the first unit available. That is my whole reason for worry.
I used pet relocation before so I know about them....
