Pet Parks

Postby dezk85 on Wed Jan 27, 2010 11:13 am

I will be moving to Yokota in March and am use to being able to run around at dog parks with my pups. Are there any areas on base that are leash free zones and fenced in, or are there other dogs parks nearby?

If not on either of those, are there many walking trails on base or nearby?

Sorry so many questions, I just literally have no idea what is offered on base in terms of outdoor activities with dogs.

Thanks so much.

There's somewhat of a dog park on the west side of base (not sure if the east side has one). It's fenced in, but it's located in the far west corner of the base and I'm pretty sure most people don't even know about it. Every once in awhile I will see dog owners out there.

dogs aare widely accepted in japan. You can take them into Malls, shopping centers, etc. Every park (i can think of 8-10 within a 5 minute walk of base) allows pets and there are always people out there playign with their dogs.

There are dog "parks" (if you can call them that) in all of the housing areas, just a bit of fenced in grass designated for dogs. I take my dog to the sports field near the flight line, it's not completely fenced in, but most of it is set pretty far from the road, and he's really obedient, so I have no worries about him running off.

There's a jogging trail that circles most of the flight line, maybe 3 - 4 miles long, that's popular for dog walking.

Like balling said, dogs are extremely popular in Japan, and well behaved pooches are welcome nearly everywhere. There are lots of parks off base, including an awesome trail along the river, no clue how long it is, we've never managed to find either end of it!

The military rec area up in Tama offers miles and miles of wooded area and trails, we love taking our dog up there, packing a picnic and making a full day of it.

There's a pretty popular Dog Park about a five minute drive from the Base, one that is fenced off with two seperate areas for big dogs, and another for medium to small dogs; completely free also.

I'll do my best here to give directions.

Go out the Fussa Gate (or Terminal) and take a right. Go down Route 16 (going North) until you come to the section that either splits off to the left or goes down under the tunnel; chose the road that veers left. Go through the first stoplight and follow the curves to the big second stoplight; this road will be primarily Shin Ome Kaido. But, there are actually five directions you can go here, and in this case, you want to chose the immediate left. NOT the left that will follow Shin Ome Kaido, but the one that is diagonal left, as if turning back around to go in nearly the same direction you came from. This little road will come up to a set of railroad tracks, which you proceed past, and then you'll see a public parking spot appear on your left. Park there. Directly across the street from the first parking area is the dog park. To access it, you'll have to walk down a little path (maybe they call it a road - lol) and you can't miss it. If nothing else, look for where everyone else is going in, or coming out of with their doggles.

The last couple times we took our pooch there, I think there was an average of about 15-some dogs in each area, so expect a lot of creatures. If your dog is non-sociable with other dogs, you're screwed there. If they're very sociable, they'll have a blast.

There's another easy way to get to that park, but I just chose the most simplistic route to describe.
If you're not enjoying it, you're doing it wrong...

Thanks for all the great information. Finding information for the 4-legged children is always difficult.
