Fence installation

Postby sval514 on Sat May 23, 2009 8:09 am

Is Hada the only one available on base to do so? We had another gentleman by the last name of Johnson, I believe it was, quote us too but he has since gone back to the states. I just want to make sure we compare available prices before making out final decision being that it is very expensive.
I'm just so curious...why do we have to BUY a fence? I remember when my dad was in the Army we RENTED a fence for a small fee since, obviously, it was not our house and we eventually would be moving out of there. We have a dog and 2 kids so are going to have to just suck it up and give up the money. I can't find myself letting my kids just wander around (out of my eyesight) even if we are on base. It amazes me how many possible 3/4 yr olds I see w/no parent insight.
Anyway, sorry went off subject a little. Any info would be great.

Does Self Help give you the supplies and then you can install it yourself or pay someone to do it? Or do you have to actually pay for the fence supplies as well? And what seems to be the going rate?

Nikki,
We have been quoted $18.50/ft from Keith Johnson and Hada quoted us $21/ft. This does include the supplies. There are a few things you need to pick up at self help for them though like paint, brushes and rollers.

Thanks for your replies. I'm not at Yokota yet, but I was wondering about the fence issue because it seems strange to me that Self Help would not provide all the supplies. It's not like your going to take the fence with you when you leave, right?

No youwouldnt but housing makes you take it down when you leave your house. I wish that they would just put fencing up at everyones house like they did at our last base. I wish that we had the option of chain link or wood. I personally favor chainlink. I do not like not being able to see through the other side of the fence.

Well, I just wanted to say Keith Johnson did put up our fence and he did an awesome job and he was pretty darn quick. It took him 3 days but this was b/c it rained. I honestly think he could have done it in 2. Self help does provide all that's needed and I think it's housing (or self help) that actually has the info as to how to put the fence up yourself, but we've met a couple of people that have tried to do it themselves and are still in the process months later. I guess you have to dig about 6 feet down for the posts and once you get to about the 4th foot, you hit concrete. It was ridiculously expensive, but I do enjoy hanging out in the backyard w/my kids and dog at the same time and not having to run around too far chasing them back home. I do feel a little secluded from neighbors, but you can still see a bit thru the fence.

Does anyone know approximately how many feet the fences in 3-br garden units run? I'm just trying to get a WAG so I'll know what to budget. I'm in the same boat as Sval, living without a fence is not an option. I'm also considering a few options such as hiring someone to sink the posts, and then I'll do the rest. Have any of you tried that route? How'd it work out for you?

We put ours up ourselves.. not too difficult unless you have no handyman capabilities at all lol. Also... people sell fences cheap at pcs time so u can get a used one for a fraction of the cost. A keg of beer and pizza will likely get you the help you need to help put up plus tge sections are already assembled. Just my $.02!

The sizes vary throughout base. From what I've seen we have one of the larger yards which was, I believe, 84 ft total. Just a few houses down their yard was quite smaller than ours. It all depends which unit you get (whether in the middle, on the side, or even next to another set of homes).
