Unauthorized residents to get the boot at Yokota

Postby Paparage on Tue Mar 09, 2010 10:51 pm

I saw this in today's Stars & Stripes. I say, GOOD kick 'em out. If they're not authorized to be on base then they need to be living off base. But, this is Yokota and I will believe it when I see it.

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — Rules are rules, and people not authorized to live on base have to go, Yokota officials warned Friday.

So far, between 40 and 50 family members of troops and civilian employees have been identified as possibly living at Yokota in violation of Defense Department regulations, which restrict base housing to eligible personnel and their authorized dependents, said Col. Rafael Quezada, commander of the 374th Mission Support Group at Yokota.

Just because a person is related to someone living on base, doesn’t make that person a dependent, Quezada said.

Once children turn 21 — or 23 for full-time college students — they are no longer considered dependents. Exceptions are granted for those with certain medical conditions, which can also qualify aging parents and other family members as dependents.

About time...
But like you said, "I'll believe it when I see it..."
If a dependent has passed 21 and is still mooching off Mommy & Daddy (which if living on base also means mooching off the government) then they need a good kick in the pants to get on with their lives.
If you're not enjoying it, you're doing it wrong...

I have heard that there are several families here on base that have their(service member or spouse) both parents, brothers and sisters living here on base with them. I am just glad that there is an attempt to start cracking down on this. This could also be how come the commissary and bx have been checking id's on a regular basis. I love that now I can go to the commissary and not see several items that I need are already purchased.

Some people see it as an inconvenience, having ID's checked and having Commanders looking into who is authorized where, but personally I see it as a protection of the benefits I've EARNED; and I stressed earned because so many these days just try to leech off someone else's accomplishments rather than try and benefit from their own...

I don't know...as active duty if I take my family with me overseas they should be able to stay with me until the end of my DEROS. It may not be ideal but it is better than shipping someone back to the states alone without a support network. I think we run in to problems when people abuse it though. It would be hard to draw the line on what is acceptable and what is not.

As active duty you should be able to take your legal DEPENDENTS with you. The issue is people are living on base who are not legal dependents.

Exactly.. and "taking your family" with you is fine, but once they've reached 21, if they're still dependent on a "support network" to survive, then you've made some mistakes in raising them; to be said bluntly...

My oldest is only 12 so I can't presume to know what the circumstances will be when he is 21 but, my point is this. If I have a dependent who is say, 18/19 and a senior in high school then he/she is going to move with me overseas. If I am there on a 4 year tour then that dependent should be able to stay with me regardless of how anyone feels about the way I raised my child. That would put them at 22/23. I am not saying this is ideal but I also would just ship my child back to the states alone.
